At a time when Carmonize should be posting numerous glimpses into the life of an intern, sadly, the posts have not been forthcoming. Despite what seasoned Blogger's would suggest (They say: Don't post about why you have not written a post) I have decided that I give those of you who follow several reasons:

Numero Uno: June 2 - 20...Finals, numerous papers, and saying goodbye to the friends I made in San Jose. Graduation hits you upside the head - one day you're a student, the next, you're unemployed.

Numero Dos: Finding a job. It's hard I tell you - those of you who have the time to craft your interview skills (which includes the brief, yet compelling emails) I strongly encourage you to do so.

Numero Tres: Moving to San Francisco. Can I just say that living in the city that you've loved since you were a teenager (for me, when "Indie" was Hipster) is completely dream-like.

Numero Quatro: Starting a job with the agency you've jocked since you had a clue. Working for Butler, Shine, Stern & Partners has made the past three years of - well, hell - so worthwhile. I couldn't imagine working with better people & fan-tas-tic clients.

Numero Cinqo: Discovering the joys of a 9 - ... (yeah, sometimes it's 6, lately 8:30pm). I can actually have dinner, go to the gym and enjoy the city.

So what's next for Carmonize? I am compelled to continue to track down internships - I mean, that shit is hard and I try to take out the legwork. However, I think that the direction of the blog will begin to take on a new approach: That of a person learning the ropes of working in an ad agency. I think you'll like. I hope you do.

Drunk-tern: A little advice for the tipsy

Dear Intern -

I feel it's my responsibility as a former 'tern to tell you: Do not drink the punch!

Yes - it's true, agency people love to let their hair down, but let me tell you, do not let yours lose its shape.

I know the feeling of wanting to fit in so badly that you sip, Sip, SIP vodka soda after vodka soda because well - it feels great and it's low cal. However, before you down that next glass of fire water, let me remind you of a thing called a REPUTATION.

A reputation, along with your looks, can quickly fade. A good one takes a lot of time and energy to craft, and at the end of your internship is one of the deciding factors if an agency keeps you on. So here are a few tips for surviving the OPEN BAR e-mail:

Do not experiment with your drinks. Nothing says NOOB like someone who orders a Cosmo followed by an Irish Car Bomb. Stick to one drink - preferably something that doesn't scream "I saw this in a TGIF menu."
Pretend to drink something that you're not. E.g. I order Non-alcoholic beers and ask the bartender to pour it into a pint glass. Looks like the real thing, feels like your best Sunday dress. I do this when I want to build street cred - Image means a lot in the industry world, but it doesn't mean you need to be a fool. Act smart.
Drink a glass of water between drinks. For added affect, ask for it on the rocks in a tumbler with a wedge of lime.
Don't be the last to leave. Open bars & agency outings are just like parties - you want to make an appearance but you don't want to be the entertainment. Have a drink, perhaps two, but then leave. Always remember to make your rounds and leave people wanting more.
Keep your dirty laundry in the laundry basket. Agency life, just like life, is ripe full of people who love the gossip mill. I highly suggest you watch Mad Men and watch Don Draper handle his business - like a well tuned stealth fighter. My hero. Just remember, your secrets can quickly become email fodder the next day.
Finally, have a Wing-tern. They're that fellow intern you can trust to tell you in private that you're nearing the edge baby...step back from that ledge my friend! A good one is hard to find since many interns see each other as competition and would like nothing more than for you to show the ECD just how good you are the Lambada. If you find a Wing-Tern, keep them close.

My First Time

Yesterday afternoon, I saw the tv spot for the campaign I had worked on while interning at Campbell Mithun for the first time.

Watching the commercial for Nature Valley, I couldn't help but become really emotional - it was as if those 10 weeks I spent working alongside some of the most hard-working people just came flooding back.

What I remember most, is showing the spot to the client and thinking to myself how great it felt to work as part of the team that created such a moving spot. I want to feel that again.

Creativity Comes from Everywhere

A few weeks ago, a rumor started circulating that a rep from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners would be coming to speak to a group of San Jose State University students. My first thought: Someone has been taking one too many happy pills. Flash forward a few weeks (and a few more rumors) and I'm sitting in a lecture hall with 80 other students listening to John Coyne, Worldwide Group Director for HP at Goodby.

I'm going to spare you the joyful expletives that filled my mind when John first stepped foot into the room - but lets just say that despite working with Goodby for 10 years, he still has the approachability of Joe Six-Pack.

The message of the day: Creativity Comes from Everywhere

John started his presentation with a brief background of Goodby, here's the Cliff Notes version:

GSP has been around since 1983 (Sadly, I'm older than them)
Currently employs a smidge over 500 employees
Client list . . . well their client list is like Oscar role call (Sprint, CA Fluid Milk Processors, and Hewlett-Packard to name a few)
GSP has experienced tremendous growth in the past two years in web/interactive campaigns (yes, traditional campaigns are still in play, but they no longer make up the majority of GSP puts out)

John continued with his message by presenting case studies from three clients

Haagen-Dazs: "Help the honey Bee's"
NBA: "There can only be one"
Wii Wario Land: "Shake It!"

The work:

The beauty of this campaign isn't in its execution (though it is quite beautiful) it's that the idea originated from a Media Planner who after reading an article about the disappearance of honey bee's, began working with creatives at GSP that eventually led to the campaign as you see it today.

NBA: "There Can Only Be One"

Again, rather than coming from the expected source, this idea originated from a Media Strategist at GSP who understood how to use RSS feeds from the NBA homepage which allowed GSP to pair players from teams who were playing against each other that day (Warning: I could have screwed this up, I tried to get my head around it - really did).

This approach by GSP emphasized the importance of approaching creativity from different angles - in particular, how to collaborate with media vendors (like Youtube).

Internship: Arc Worldwide

You know that saying: When it rains, it pours? Well today - it's pouring internships, which isn't a bad thing. There's something for everyone today, including those interested in post production.

Arc Woldwide is looking for a Motion Graphics intern this summer at their Chicago office.

I've said it once, I'll say it again. If you want to land an internship or entry-level job you must, Must, MUST read the trade pubs.

Today - AdWeek reported that Northlich (Cincinnati, OH) was selected as the creative shop for the Ohio Lottery Commission. Congrats!

As a student, you should connect the dots: New business + more revenue = Warm bodies needed. A quick visit to their website and BEHOLD: An internship opportunity!

12-week program
Applicants must be pursuing a 4-year degree or recent graduate, majoring in Marketing or Communications
It's cross-disciplinary, i.e. you'd be working across advertising, marketing and PR platforms - so really you'd get your hands dirty (always good for the NOOBs)

There's a job post on BBDO Detroit's website for an Account Services intern. Unfortunately, the internship is unpaid - but I wouldn't really gripe about it since the only client their office serves is Chrysler.

Chrysler, as you know, may be going the way of the dinosaur - yes, bankruptcy could be a very real possibility for the automaker during the midst of the internship. Another possibility is that Fiat may take control of Chrysler which could lead to a shake up of its AOR.

Lets look at it from the cup half full method: You'll get a chance to experience history in the making.

Tips: Resumes - Part 1 of a 3 part series

Occasionally, I'll get asked how I managed to work my way into BBH NY and Campbell Mithun, and naturally, the conversation always leads towards three things: Resumes, phone interviews and personal interviews. More specifically, people ask me what I did or didn't do in regards to each of them.

Anytime I offer my advice, I emphasize that I'm not the authoritative person on any of the subjects, so I'm always glad when I can get the inside scoop from the people students need to impress - recruiters.

Susan Engle, Director of Human Resources at Mediasmith, recently spoke with students of San Jose State's advertising club about what students need to do to get noticed for entry-level positions. Though recruiting varies from shop-to-shop, Susan provided some solid info about what she looks for in an applicant.

Today, I'll share what Susan recommends students should do to make their resume more appealing. Check back later this week for tips on phone interviews and personal interviews.

Resumes:

Resumes should be one page - no more, no less
Always proofread your resume; Resumes/cover letters should always be free of grammatical errors. Though it sounds easy enough, you'd be surprised how many times I've seen resumes that have simple spelling errors that make you wonder - is this person actually in college? (oh man, like I should talk - I'm a horrid speller but because I know this, I proofread several times - unless it's on this blog :p)
Don't lie or inflate your resume - trust that a recruiter can sniff out a liar
The skills section counts! Susan explained that though there is software that students won't get training on while in college, she can judge if a student has the disposition to learn a new tool by how proficient they are with the software available to them
Incorporate buzzwords from job-postings into your resume
Include something about yourself - like a hobby. This allows the recruiter and applicant an opportunity to relax. My resume states that I have a mac'n cheese recipe that will make me famous - it ALWAYS gets brought up in interviews (yes, the pic is my MnC - drooling is completely appropriate)
Change your objective for the position - in other words, if you're applying for the position of media tracker don't leave that you're desperately wanting to work the dressing room of Urban Outfitters on your resume
Mention projects you've worked on only if you feel that they are stellar and wouldn't mind sharing them during a personal interview

One of the best lessons I ever learned while working on campaigns for Nature Valley, Levi's and Mentos was that good advertising is universal. True, targeted spots reign supreme, but every once in a while I come across something that reminds me that no matter what we look like, who we love or where we live that we are in essence the same beings.

An Intern Story: Find me a door

It was another monstrously humid day in New York City. Despite my attempt to appear "put-together" the 45-minute 1 train from Washington Heights to Tribeca had left me looking more like a hag-tern than intern. Settling into my seat at the NOOB table I propped myself up to appear ready for anything my AE would throw at me.

An hour later, she approaches with an unusual task. "Find a door," she says.

I stare at her for a minute trying to process what she had just said. We had been working with each other for a little over a week and I hadn't quite found my groove.

"A door? Like a door you find on someones house?" I ask.
"Yes. I need it by 1 o'clock this afternoon - try to stay under $75," her voice trailing as she walked briskly back at to her desk - no doubt the client was on hold.

As an intern, you need to be prepared for situations such as this that go completely against your preconceived notions of what an intern does. True, a door is nothing like accompanying your AE to a photo shoot, but the same innovation to how you approach the task goes into play.

To start, I called the local Home Depot. After all, this is what a kid from a Los Angeles suburb does when they're looking for a door. Apparently, Home Depot doesn't sell doors in Manhattan. No - if you want a door, you must visit the Home Depot in Long Island City. Naturally, the thought of carrying a door across the Burroughs was just not happening.

I called up a few places and discovered a hardware store a few blocks away from the agency and asked a Friend-tern (Definition: A fellow intern that you don't throw under the bus and actually trust; this occurs after copious amounts of beer following a grueling day) if they would accompany me.

The hardware store - I tell you - is man heaven. It requires a certain kind of skill to get anyone to do anything for you. So I say with my most manly of voices, "I need a door - a cheap door that looks like it costs more than it does."

30 minutes later a door is lowered from the 3rd story storage area but it is missing a key element: A door handle.

I should backtrack a bit - the door was to be used for a presentation to the client. It was pivotal to the campaign - the cornerstone you could say. The door needed to look like it could work . . . like you could walk through it and enter a world unique to the brand. Hence, why the door knob was vital.

Back to the story. After browsing knobs for a while, I was perplexed at the exorbitant amount of money they would cost (it would have put me well over the $75 limit). So I ask one of the associates if they had something cheaper - something less real. Turns out, my request wasn't unheard of. This being the center of theater culture, faux-door knobs were in constant supply. A faux knob is a one-sided knob that gives the impression that it actually opens - in essence, it is a prop.

Realizing that I would have to install the knob myself and knowing that I have never been fond of powertools (hence why I always have a BFF lesbian in my life) I bargained with the guy who brought the door out and offered him $10 if he would install the handle. He did it for $15, but that left me with $10 to spare.

As friend-tern and I walked down West Broadway with knobed-door in hand we waved at celebrities trying hard to feign interest in her platter of greens at the SoHo Grand.

Opening up the delivery elevator on the 19th floor with door in toe, I asked my AE where she would like the door.

"Anywhere," she said, slipping me a sly grin - I knew I had fell into her good graces.

Housing: Finding your i-pad

So you've landed an internship - Fabulous!

Now the biggest question on your mind is: Where to live?

The first thing you should do is calculate how much you can afford. For some, mom and dad will foot the bill, for others a student loan may help with the cost - whatever the case, you should know what you have to work with before beginning your search. (I'll be writing a post about how to raise some money next week).

Next, do some research on the city you'll be interning and try to find out about the different neighborhoods. Here are some resources for different cities:

Once you have found a few neighborhoods that you think would be ideal for you, check out the housing options available.

Renting a room or subletting an apartment:
Your best resource will be Craigslist. Under the housing section you can find great places that are updated often - so set up an RSS feed if you want to swoop in before anyone else does.

University Housing:
Many colleges throughout the US offer Summer housing for interns and may even include a meal plan. Here are a few worth checking out:

New York City - NYU
New York City - Columbia University
Chicago - The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Atlanta - Emory University
Los Angeles - UCLA

While you're checking out housing options, make sure to keep in mind how long it would take you to get to your internship. Google maps has a good tool for estimating commute time for driving, public transportation and walking - check it out.

Right this very second, I'm sitting atop the 8th floor of my school's library (it's the quiet floor) and I'm checking out Wieden Kennedy's website - you know, because I want to learn more about them. I rarely get this excited about ads but then I came across their work for Nokia (done by the London office) - and I'm floored. Actually, I'm not. I'm dancing (very Monica Belluci-like in Irreversible). Here's some of the work:

Ever wanted to know what it's like to work at an agency without actually working there? My suggestion, find someone who's worked there and ask to talk to them. Case and point - I was recently contacted by a candidate for Campbell Mithun's Lucky 13 internship program.

Here's how he did it:

He joined Campbell Mithun's Facebook Page for The Lucky 13
He noticed that I had posted a comment on their wall & sent a friend request accompanied by a nice message and a link to his blog: Guy with Ideas
He then asked if I would talk to him via Skype (a cheap alternative to phone calls - especially when you're calling from London like he was)
He set up a time for us to talk and asked great questions about The Lucky 13

By the end of conversation he had an interns perspective of what it's like to work at an agency. You can do the same thing.

Utilize social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouIntern (to name a few) to get in contact with former interns and ask them what it's like to work at the agency they worked at.

The worst case scenario is they'll say no. In that case, you move on to someone else - however, I highly doubt they would because EVERYONE I've ever met who's interned at an agency wants to share their story (even if all they did was make coffee).

Internship: COLABORATORY Deadline is April 10th

Internship season isn't quite over. In fact - it's not over until you get your offer in writing. That said, if you're going to apply to just one more internship, apply to COLABORATORY.

One of the best aspects of COLABORATORY is the opportunity to work with not one, but three of the agencies listed above. As someone who's played the internship game, I think it's an incredibly unique opportunity to see what the culture is like at each agency.

What also makes COLABORATORY so unique is that the interns work on a campaign pitch to a local client. Though their website veils the client in mystery, I want to let you in on a little secret: It's Columbia Sportswear's International Division. (My reaction to this starts at 2:30)

Just a heads up, their application is extremely intense (as it should be) so you should definitely put some time into it. I mean, if they've created a cheat sheet for the application, you should know they mean business.

Open House @ Campbell Mithun!!!

Campbell Mithun is hosting an open house for anyone interested in a career in advertising tomorrow, Feb. 20th.

I confirmed with a source @ CM that you can still RSVP, but you should do so NOW (literally).

It's refreshing to know that a large agency like CM is being so transparent about how they operate by inviting the public in to see the agency - someone definitely is taking a cue from Obama.

This would be a great opportunity for those applying to The Lucky 13, Campbell Mithun's internship program, to check out their office.

In The News: Marketers cutting budgets amidst record job cuts

Part of prepping yourself for the ad world is to know the ad world. As of today I will periodically link up to some articles that are not only important to WE as interns but WE as an industry.

According to Ad Age, 77% of marketers are planning to cut their media budgets. The result of our 14-month recession is definitely taking a toll on the ad industry and those who work in it are being directly affected.

In another Ad Age article, the advertising industry cut 18,700 jobs in December alone, bringing the total job loses since the recession to 65,100.

As an intern or entry-level applicant, it's incredibly important to know the state of the industry. Expec more competition for entry level jobs & internships and less interest from recruiters in the upcoming months.

Just yesterday, a fellow blogger pointed out that an internship that Saatchi LA had posted on Youintern was no longer in place. It makes sense in hindsight, Saatchi LA, like almost every shop out there is suffering from the recession.

There is a silver lining. For those students who still have a few more semesters before they graduate, digital experience is key. In fact, internet-media companies and web-search portals are the only sector of the industry adding jobs.

That said, I'm curious to know what you've been doing in light of the economic downturn to make you stand out from the rest. Use the comments section to post your tips, stories, and reactions to the news.

Internship: Multicultural Advertising Training

The Multicultural Advertising Training (M.A.T.) program is currently looking for candidates for Summer 2009.

The requirements for the program:

Minority college student (junior, senior, recent graduate or masters candidate)
2.7 GPA preferred (notice the lack of a period after GPA)

Unlike MAIP, it runs year round with Spring and Fall internships available.

SJSU: Copywriting Course Needs More Students

Prof. Mark Jordan is looking for a few more students to fill up his Advertising 124 Copywriting course. The class meets Tuesday nights from 6pm - 8:45. Students should have completed MCOM 100W, ADV 91 and ENG 71.

This is a mandatory class for advertising students on the creative track and is essential for creating pieces for ones portfolio.

On a personal note, Prof. Jordan is quite the witty character - he's exactly the type of person anyone considering copywriting as a profession should be learning under.

Internship: IPG Lucky 13

Disclaimer: I'm an alum of IPG's Lucky 13 - so pardon my enthusiasm!

Hands down, if I had to make a recommendation for students looking for a comprehensive internship, IPG's Lucky 13 would be it.

I've heard countless stories of students who landed what they were hoping to be their dream internship, only to realize that the agency didn't know what to do with them once they're there. Not the case with The Lucky 13.

From day 1, I knew exactly what was expected of me. My Account Supervisor and the AAE who I worked directly under briefed me on the status of current projects and detailed what I would learn during my 10-weeks as an account management intern on the General Mills business. I still remember shuddering at their frankness concerning the workload.

By day 3, I was working on assignments side by side with the AAE, attending meetings at General Mills, and learning more things than most interns learn in an entire summer.

By the last day of the internship, I had learned more than I had throughout my entire college experience and felt ready to enter as a junior employee - which should be the goal of EVERY internship.

One of the things that I appreciated most about my time with Campbell Mithun, was the mentoring I received from not just my supervisor and AAE, but from anyone I came into contact with. It was through these interactions that I developed a very keen sense of the work CM does and the direction they're heading - but moreso, about what my role as an intern (and future job prospect) means to the agency.

Enough of the sentimentality - here's what The Lucky 13 do BEYOND their workload:

Brown Bag Lunches - Weekly meetings with some of the agencies top reps from each division
Speaker Series - Notable speakers explain what it means to work their field; followed by an hour of Q&A with CM's HR rep
Social Activities - Including a BBQ with our Keepers (think mentors - I know, Keepers sounds creepy, but they're actually quite nice).
Weekly Testimonials - Interns are emailed a question weekly and asked to record their testimonial in the "Confession Room" (think The Real World). At the end of the program the clips were created into a video (which I'm sure has leaked somewhere on the internet).
Speed Interviews - It's like speed dating minus the date
NSAC-Style Competition* - Interns were split into two teams and presented a fictional pitch to six judges comprised of agencies reps. The "client" - Grain Belt.

Interns: Looking Beyond New York City

Oh New York City! Center of the Universe!

In an unofficial, unethical, and unoriginal survey, I found that the majority of college students want to start their advertising careers in New York City.

Reality Check. It's really fucking expensive.

This isn't a diatribe about NYC. I love the city - it's great. The bars are open late, the people are eclectic/beautiful/successful (add any adjective you want really), and the ad industry is booming (OK, not now, but you know what I mean).

However, I'd like to ask the question: How the hell can one afford to live in Manhattan (even the Burroughs) off of a Jr. Anything's salary?

One just needs to scan today's Craigslist postings to get an idea of how much rent is. It's ungodly. It's downright horrendous. It's more equivalent to what many Americans pay for a mortgage.

So why oh why do people insist on moving there right out of college when there are a handful of cities that can offer SOME (notice I still give NYC a lot of credit here) of what Manhattan has to offer and at a fraction of the cost?

One of my biggest factors in opting out of an internship in NYC this past summer was the experience I had the previous summer interning in New York City. The honest truth, I went through $4K in one month. I'll admit, I could have been more frugal with my spending habits, but even if I did cut down, I would have still been out a good $2K.

The moral of the story: Consider other cities/regions/locales. Remember that a zip code isn't everything and that an interns salary only goes so far. New York City will always be. Why not hold off on it until you've got the means to truly enjoy it?

Interns: Playing the field

Chances are, if you're hunting down an internship, you've probably sent out your resume to 10+ agencies. The first time I applied for an internship I thought of it as a numbers game. In my case, I emailed/called 50 agencies, heard back from three, and got one offer.

So what happens when you get call-backs from multiple agencies. It could happen, right?

Recently, a MAIP semi-finalist asked if they should continue looking for other internships despite being on track to land a very prestigious one (if not, the most prestigious). The answer: Abso-fucking-lutely!

Here's the deal. HR reps understand that all prospects are actively looking for internships. Just because you get a call-back, doesn't mean that the internship is a sure thing (however, you should definitely treat it as one).

This is where the notes section on your spreadsheet will come in handy. Tracking what was said and by whom will help you to avoid making mistakes if you get multiple agencies interested in you - could you imagine if you sent off a list of your favorite Lovemarks(a very Saatchi thing) to TBWA/Chiat/Day? Blasphemy!

The best thing that could happen to you is that you get multiple offers. This is where it will take some skill in leveraging your negotiation skills. For instance, if you get two offers, one paid and the other unpaid, you can make the HR rep of the unpaid internship aware of the compensation you're being offered at the other agency. If they really want you, they'll match it (This would only work if you were given some time to think about the offers - some internships expect you to give a response on the spot).

Be warned! You should have a value associated with each agency/program you're applying to. For example: If you've been offered an internship at Crispin Porter + Bogusky and one at Mom & Pops Ad Schack - you're definitely going not going to tell CP + K that The Shack is offering you a stipend. That would just make you seem like an idiot - right?

Moral of the story: Don't stop looking for internships just because you got a call-back/interview/nice email. Continue looking for the best internship until you've found the best match for you.

If you're on the look out for an internship at an ad agency, one of my top tips is to follow new business. Case and point: Fallon recently won three, count them 1-2-3, new business pitches over the past three months.

Flashback to a post I wrote a few days ago announcing Fallon's hunt for interns this summer. It's safe to assume that the influx of business has Fallon on the look out for talent.

The moral of the story is to keep your eyes & ears open. New business typically equals a need for new talent, and that dear readers, is where you can snatch up that ad internship you've been looking for. Who knows, you might just make it after all.

Just know, I in no way represent MAIP or AAAA, but am a 2008 MAIP alum. My responses are purely from my perspective as a student trying to make it into the ad industry.

My background is in account management (with a not-so-secret penchant for planning), so do keep that in mind. If you have questions about any of the other departments, I'll be happy to answer them, but naturally, they will be skewed. In addition to my internship at Campbell Mithun (Minneapolis) through MAIP I have also done an internship at BBH NY in 2007. So feel free to ask some hard hitting questions. Interns: Creating Your Spreadsheet

I've just finished giving two presentations to SJSU's latest batch of ad majors. The consensus: They're keeners.

That's a good thing, because if they want to break into the industry they'll need to poke and prod as much as possible to soak up all the info between now and when they graduate.

After I give a presentation I always walk away learning something about myself. During Monday's presentation I learned that I wasn't just "Lucky."

No dear reader - I worked my ass off. I really fucking did. Here's a list of what I did prior to landing my first internship with BBH NY:

Applied (and got rejected) to the Vance & Betty Lee Stickell Internship Program. In the process, I put together my first professional resume and found my mentor.
Visited NYC with SJSU's School of Journalism and Mass Communications. While I was there, I visited Deutsch, McCann Erickson, CNN and Good Housekeeping. I talked to people - at the agencies/at bars/on the subway. I always got a card & followed up with them.
I spoke with an Account Planner from RPA that a friend of mine hooked me up with. He was the first person who really gave me an understanding of what planning was and introduced me to Jon Steel's: Truth, Lies and Advertising - aka, The Planners Bible.
I absorbed as much information from AdAge, Creativity, AdWeek, my professors and anyone else who would give me the time of day.
I volunteered at The Billy DeFrank GLBT center. I learned how to talk to a wide range of people from what many consider a homogeneous minority. You couldn't be more wrong.
I called/emailed/pleaded with agencies throughout the US for two weeks straight. I would wake up at 5 am and start calling agencies on the East Coast and then work my way west. When I had reached the Pacific Time Zone, I would start over again. In the process I learned how to talk to receptionists, how to leave a voicemail, how to email HR reps, and how to use Excel.

The last bit is what I want to show you. Keeping a spreadsheet of agencies is a great tool for anyone who wants to land an internship (or even an entry-level job). Here's a snapshot of one I did last year (while waiting for MAIP's decision).

So the first thing you'll notice is that there is basic info: Agency name, location, telephone and address. This helps to keep things all in one place and prevents you from hunting websites for general contact info.

The next thing you'll need are columns with your contacts info: Contact name, their direct # and email (also take note of the Initial Date of Contact and how you contacted them). Knowing when you contacted people is imperative to not coming across as annoying but showing that you're persistent.

The next section includes: Feedback and notes. This is the section you use to document the details of your conversations and helps you list your next steps (following what the HR rep asks you to do is imperative to making a good impression). Make sure you document everything you talk about immediately after talking with an HR rep.

That said - get working on your spreadsheet and I'll post something juicy in the next day or two.

SJSU: Hone Your Presentation Skills w/MCOM 181A - 04

JMC is offering a new, 1-unit course in presentation skills this semester. The course will be taught by the schools most fabulous professor, Denise Delaney.

Anyone remotely interested in advertising should take this course. Presenting is key to climbing the ladder at any agency - those who master the art of speaking in an engaging manner are the ones who get promoted fastest. Think of it this way, the more time you spend in front of an audience the less likely you'll be a bumbling mess in front of your boss (which then equals less money you spend at the bar trying to forget it).

The course runs from March 10th - April 28th from 6-8:45pm on Tuesday evenings. If you're interested in the course, you must register by Feb. 10.

I'm not a huge fan, but the spots use 3D glasses - which is kind of awesome because they'll be able to track how many people they reached by the volume of glasses they sold/gave out (not really sure what they're going to do with it).

Yikes! the Sobe ad cost $5M to make - that's insane! That's atrocious! I thought we were in a recession!

Here's the presentation for Gatorade. It's got an MTV Made theme to it. Could be interesting to watch the (I'm assuming webisodes or something like it - it kind of reminds me of the thing BBH did with The Gamekillers for Axe).

The spot for Pepsi Diet Max is better. It's being pushed as the first diet soft drink for men. I'm a sucker for monkey's and at least they didn't pull a Snickers on us.

AgencySpy lost its juice. Literally. No battery life, means no blogging - boo. Anyways, at least we got to see the work TBWA is pumping out for Pepsi. For the most part, I can say it's got baby-legs. A little wobbley, but I think they'll get into the groove (I'll say a little prayer).

MAIP 2009 Application: A Reflection

Friday December 5th, 2008 - 5PM EST.

For students applying to AAAA's Multicultural Advertising Internship Program, this marked the first deadline that would determine their acceptance into the most prestigious network of diverse advertising professionals.

After completing the 2008 MAIP program I returned to San Jose State University's Advertising department determined to inspire other multicultural students to apply for the program (as diverse as the SF Bay area itself). What initially began as a few informational presentations about my experiences as a MAIP intern at Campbell Mithun and a previous internship at BBH NY, evolved into something much more complex than what I had originally anticipated.

During the four presentations, I was inspired by several students who weren't afraid to seek me out afterwards and ask for advice about how to strategically pursue their MAIP applications. That's when it hit me - Why couldn't I offer some of my time to help mentor these students?

To be honest with you, I wasn't prepared for the level of commitment that was entailed with guiding the 16 MAIP hopefuls who sought out my assistance. There were countless 1-on-1's, endless revisions, some nagging, and up-to-the-deadline miracles throughout the process. However, we ALL managed to get through it and I wanted to thank all the students who allowed me to help them.

I've emailed the students who were on my MAIPtern (yes, I know it's corny - but it works) contact list to tell a little about what the first part of the application process was like in the comments section in hopes that future MAIPers will be able to use some of their wise words.

For students interested in the media aspect of advertising, I encourage you to check out the W. Pendleton Tudor Internship. This is an extremely prestigious internship for those looking to get into advertising sales as only one student nationwide is selected as the recipient. Be prepared to play hard for this position as the competition will be fierce.

The recipient receives a 10-week internship with Adweek magazine's marketing department in New York City. Previous recipients also received a stipend of $4,500 to cover transportation costs, food lodging and other expenses.

I've confirmed with AAF's Education Services that applications for this years program will be due by February 6, 2009, so check back frequently to the website for the updated application.

Internship: COLABORATORY

For those of you who are not eligible for MAIP and are frantically looking for an internship for the summer, check out Portland Ad Federation's COLABORATORY.

COLABORATORY is a 6-week, paid internship that places 10 students with a bevy of Portland agencies. Last years students were on rotation with three agencies throughout their summer based on their strengths and interests. In addition to their work at the agency, the interns were separated into two teams and competed in a pitch for an actual client.

I came across a few of their interns blogs (there are several of them - hunt them down, it's well worth it) over the summer and was impressed with how interconnected they were through multiple social networks. In addition to their blogs, they utilized video journals on YouTube and posted photos on Flickr. This is a great way for prospective interns to see what the program offers and to to get a glimpse into what your life as an intern would look like.

I've confirmed with PAF that COLABORATORY will be looking for interns for Summer 2009. Applications will be accepted from Feb. 1, 2009 - March 31, 2009 with finalists being notified on May 1, 2009. So check out their website, download the application and make it work!

I've been getting a lot of questions from aspiring art directors and copywriters about how to get an internship at an agency. I'll be the first one to tell you that I'm not the best person to answer that question. Both of my internships were on the account side, so naturally my "expertise" is in that discipline.

However, I came across I Have an Idea's academia blog on their website that answers a lot of your questions (and a lot of other useful tidbits). Check it out - get connected - become inspired.

Future MAIPterns

Just a re-cap of the MAIP component of the presentations given over the past week:

Applications are available now. If you didn't pick one up in class, you can visit the MAIP website and download one
The Deadline for all materials is December 5th, 2008
You'll need two letters of recommendation (preferably from a professor and an employer). The key to getting a good LOR is giving your reference plenty of time.
An unofficial transcript is required with the application. If you are a semifinalist, an official transcript will need to be submitted by January 12th. For SJSU students, this means you should be aware of the procedures of the Office of the Registrar. There are no rush requests. EVER!
For those of you in Lilly's Adv 121 Course - I will be coming in on Monday, Nov. 3rd to help you with essay writing & resume building. For those students not eligible for MAIP, I will focus on helping you build a spreadsheet of potential agencies.

Coming across this today made my over saturated brain cartwheel. I've been debating on whether to pursue grad school or planning boot camp at Miami Ad School since returning from Campbell Mithun.

However, every time I write a paper on the Shamanic Voyage of the Power Animal or The Effects of Subject Position on North African Bees I get all sickly at the thought of grad school. If this survey says I can earn just as much as someone with an MBA by attending a six week course - then boot camp it is! I'll just repress that bit about the odds of finding a jr. planning position (please don't remind me).

So I'm fresh off three presentations at San Jose State University where I spoke with students in the advertising program about how to land an internship at an agency. With two more to go and one workshop on resume building/essay writing I'm hoping that more students will become excited about the possibilities that the advertising program @ SJSU affords them.

If you attended any of the presentations, please don't hesitate to use this blog as an open forum for questions you may have about anything I discussed. Remember - there are no stupid questions.

Also - I'm in the beginning stages of launching a new branch of this blog that you may find useful in your own endeavors into the ad world.

I'll admit that I joined the team for all the wrong reasons - fame, glory and another trophy on my resume. What I got instead was the most genuine understanding of what working with a great team of people is all about.

For months, we poured our souls into the campaign - we scratched/butted/pounded our heads over every detail until we had created a message that we knew would send shivers down ones spine.

I was recently asked during an interview if I were a brand, which would I be? I can't explain how dumbfounded I was by the question - particularly because I tend to be exceedingly brand fanatical.

My first answer (yes, I took it back) was Kettle Chips, in particular, Salt & Vinegar. I eat a bag a day - no lie. For obvious reasons (you should have seen her lips purse at the mental taste) I reconsidered.

My final answer - very Merideth Viera, was Gerolsteiner, makers of natural mineral water hailing from Germany.

At the time, I felt like an idiot - I mean really, I've never seen any ads, a website or nothing that led me to think that this would be a good answer. At the time, I simply felt that Gerolsteiner represented the emotional essence I was feeling at the time - refreshing optimism.

So to make sure I wasn't a complete idiot - I checked out their website and was shocked that I wasn't such a douche after all. Here are the latest commercials for Gerolsteiner - their website puts it best:

"The new Gerolsteiner TV spots take place in the prime of life. They deal with normal people and concern positive moments of everyday life, which everbody knows. Moments when we feel good and alive."

There are some things I miss about Los Angeles - like pastrami sandwiches at Canters, midnight drives along Mulholland Dr., Too Big For Your Own Good Boobies (2BFYoGB), and The Standard (you've gotta love human aquariums). Where else could you drink a 40 and talk sudoku with the Hiltons? What's great about this ad is that it really plays up the brand identity of the hotel - i.e. the upside down marquis. Add the rooster to the mix and you have a genius print ad (for those who don't understand, stay a night at The Standard in West Hollywood and tell me what your head feels like in the morning).

For those of us who have ever worked in an office environment, where vacation days are few and far between and sick days are never used when you're actually sick - well this ad's for you. I mean really, it's always about the water cooler and the copy machine - that's where all the good stuff goes on in the office - and M&C Saatchi capture that.

Let me just point out, at the moment that Barry pops THE question, She-lien raises her swishity-swoosh in combat mode. For a second there, I thought that she was going to salivate all that gooey stuff they use to make milk shakes. The only thing that could have made this ad better was if Ripley burst through the ceiling wielding a blow torch (oh well - thank goodness for our imaginations).

Dinner in Three Hours

Yesterday, San Jose was a mild 63º, raining off and on, and so perfect for some slow-cookin'. This meal was exactly what chilly days were meant for.

The Menu:
Zucchini and Carrot Scapece
6 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
5 Large zucchini
3 Garlic cloves
1/4 Cup fresh basil leaves
1/4 Cup fresh mint leaves
10 Medium carrots
1/4 Cup red wine vinegar

Tuscan White Bean and Garlic Soup
2 Tablespoons unsalted butter
1 Tablespoon olive oil
2 Shallots
1 Fresh sage leaf
2 Cans cannellini beans
4 Cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
4 Garlic cloves
1/2 Cup heavy cream
1/2 Teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
6 Slices ciabatta bread
Extra-virgin olive oil

Tagliatelle with Short Rib Ragu
3 Tablespoons olive oil
2 Ounces pancetta
2 1/2 Pounds short ribs
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 Cup all-purpose flour
1 Medium onion
1 Carrot
1/2 Cup fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 Garlic cloves
1 Can tomatoes
1 Tablespoon tomato paste
1 Teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary
1 Teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 Teaspoon dried oregano

All in all this meal comprised most of my Saturday afternoon and early evening, but the result was well worth the effort. The most satisfying aspect of the meal was the shaved bittersweet chocolate on top of the warm short rib ragu - its subtle taste reminded me of mole, a mexican dish that also uses chocolate, that my granny makes during the winter.

I should also let you know that I will be cutting back on the meals to every other week, instead of every week. Naturally, living on a students income doesn't warrant the luxury of preparing meals every week - so for now, rather than sacrifice the integrity of the meals I prepare, I will just postpone their preparation for a week longer.

Nothing says "I love myself" like cooking yourself a delicious meal on a Saturday night. Now, you may be thinking why dinner for one? Well, to be honest, I wanted the entire bottle of Yellow Tail chardonnay for myself. Okay, okay - I lie. Here is important lesson number one: No matter how fabulous the book store is, how many gadgets there are to look at Sur De Table, or how much you enjoy a latte from Peets, you must always remember to invite someone over. Lesson learned.

The Menu:

Roasted Red Peppers & Ricotta Crostini

4 red peppers
1 fresh baquette
1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
1 1/2 cups ricotta cheese
40 grinds fresh black pepper
1 container broccoli sprouts

Garlic-Sauteed Spinach

10 ounces curly, whole leaf spinach
3 tablespoons evoo
4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
Salt

Chicken Scaloppine with Lemon-Caper Sauce

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
15 grinds fresh black pepper
Olive oil
1/3 cup white wine
2 tablespoons capers
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/2 lemon

Optional: Down a glass of wine and pump up some Feist - I think food tastes better if you move your hips as much as possible during the prep.

New York - A Huge Pill

I've taken the past few days off since returning from New York City to reflect on the madness that occurred within a weeks time. To say that my life has changed in the previous week would undermine everything that I experienced. To sum it up - New York was my alarm call.

For the past few months, maybe even the past few years, I've allowed myself to fall into a life of complacency - driven mostly by my ego and most definitely by laziness. It's easy to be one of the "best" in a city like San Jose - thankfully New York gave me a big sister "Nu uh!"

Background: Chuck (a long-time friend, confidante, and fellow lush), his sister Jennifer and I decide to go out for drinks at Splash, New York's answer to the utterly cookie-cutter gay bar. On this particular night the majority of the bar patrons were singing along to The Wiz, Cabaret and Chorus Line (just to name a few). To avoid the sing-a-long madness, the three of us decided to go downstairs. There, we found solace in cozy couches and expensive drinks. After two jack & cokes, we all saw Brian - the bartender from Jersey. Clad in translucent white chonies - we all thought we had found the most perfect man on earth. The remainder of the night Brian served up mean drinks, flirted with Jen and let me touch his pectorals - this was on top of the free drinks he shelled out. By the end of the night - I was drunk, Chuck was poor, and Jennifer was in love.

So we went back the next night.

This time we made a bee-line straight to Brian. However, the Brian from the night before (the one who melted Jen Jen's heart and made Chuck and I say Mmm mmm mmm) was not anywhere to be found. Instead - the Brian we found was arrogant, shallow and wearing different undies! Needless to say, we left early. In the cramped quarters of a cab - Jennifer proclaimed: We've been bartended!

Bartended (v.): the process by which a bartender flirts, flits and flutters into a customers mind, body and soul with the purpose of getting the most buck for his bang.

Don't even think of hijacking this definition - it's my Urban Dictionary!

Moving on - As part of the SJSU Ad group, I was granted the opportunity to meet with representatives from Deutsch NYC and McCann Erickson. Both agencies made us feel at home and gave presentations that demonstrated each agencies strengths and gave us an overview of many of the departments within an agency. I couldn't have been more happy with the information that each bestowed upon us - particularly the advice given for those of us going into art direction (if you're wondering - I love copy).

At the recommendation of a McCanner, I spent a night gyrating to one of the best sets I've heard in a while at the Marquee. Admittedly, I've been so out of the club scene since leaving LA last summer (perhaps even longer). So the notion of working the line and a promoter was daunting, particularly because I was solo. Needless to say - I must have seemed completely eager and so uncool because I showed up at 10:30 or so. After a few sips of Jameson, the awkwardness quickly faded and before I knew it I was slurring directions to a cab driver - I love this slurred language, it's so ridiculous scandalous!

The rest of the trip was quite a blur - but there is one story that I may share with you at a later date (as I am quickly finding this blog to be entirely too long - but then again, it's been entirely too long since I've really blogged).

I just want to say a friendly San Josian Hello to the Catalonians, Mr. 7 years later (aka Mr. Catherine Malandrino), Mr.Tag, Miss.Iliveacrossthestreetfromagaybarandwilldoanythingforsex, and Lilly (who has been on my ass for weeks now to get this thing going again).

In the weeks to come, look forward to a new direction with this blog. As I am feeling completely revived from hibernation, I will be discussing all things from great advertising, the ad industry, magazine spreads/articles that rock and of course, the weekly meal I treat myself for a job-well-done at the end of every week. That's not too hard to swallow now, is it?

Drinking Coffee Elsewhere: Other than SJSU

I was asked to review another candidate for San Jose State Universities Campus Reading Program. Drinking Coffee Elsewhere is a series of short-stories by ZZ Packer.

The collection of short stories found in Drinking Coffee Elsewhere is rich with events that people often live but rarely have the talent (or courage) to write. As someone who enjoys the slice of life genre that Packer has so eloquently composed, I would highly recommend reading Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, but not as part of the San Jose State University Campus Reading Program.

The themes of Packer’s stories revolve around African-Americans and women, both of which need people with a strong voice to bring attention to their stories. However, I feel that a work of fiction whose focus is so narrow would alienate many of the students at SJSU and would recycle ideas that the majority of the student population has already been exposed to. This would go against the very idea of what I believe this program should be about, which is to generate discussion of problems unique to our generation. This is not to say that the struggles of African-Americans and women are of no concern to the student body, but rather these issues have had their opportunity to be discussed. My fear, if the committee chooses Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, is that many students will tune out before they take the time to read Packers work.

Furthermore, the idea of presenting a series of short stories to the students of SJSU and expecting them to read them all in their entirety is an absurd notion. Though there is a common thread in the stories, they are unique to themselves and would present a difficult challenge to most students, in the event they are assigned work related to the book. On a more personal note – think about how you read a collection of short stories. Do you read them from cover to cover? Do you read all of them? Chances are you read the ones that interest you and leave the others alone. To assign every story in Drinking Coffee Elsewhere would go against the principles of how one should read such a collection. With that said, I encourage you to select a different book for the Campus Reading Program, but please, do spread the word of the undeniable talent of ZZ Packer.

Miss Packer - if you come across this, I aspire to write even 1/10 as well as you ...no, 1/20.

Oryx and Crake - One step closer to 33,000 sold

The following is a letter/review I did for Margaret Atwood's novel, Oryx and Crake. It is up for the SJSU campus wide reading program. With a student body of 33,000+, the author whose work is chosen will be blessed with a high volume of book sales and the opportunity to speak at a university that is making a name for itself.

I find myself thinking often about the speculative nature of Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake since I was approached with the task of reviewing it from a students’ perspective. Simply put, the book is haunting. It’s a glimpse into a future that I fear (as we all should) but one that can become a reality. Atwood’s writing is fluid and beautifully descriptive while maintaining a core of truth.

There are moments when I have woken up with my morning cup of coffee reading the news, where I’d have, an “oh shit” moment – you know the almost frightening déjà vu that takes over and you can almost hear someone saying, “I told you so.” This is the feeling I’ve had ever since reading Atwood’s book and for very good reasons. Atwood’s story of the future is one that has roots in the present. Her novel dives into the effects of a world that we are now shaping – everything from cloning, biotechnology, genetics, child pornography and social division. As a student and inhabitant of a world that is evolving rapidly, the topics Atwood addresses are conducive to discussions that those at the university level should be prepared to share. For those students (and faculty) who have little exposure to the topics that Atwood explores, Oryx and Crake is a great introduction.

Naturally, the committee making the final decision on which book to choose for 33,000 students needs to take into account the functionality for such a broad student body. Atwood’s novel presents contemporary ideas that are universal to most, if not all SJSU students. Not to say that every person who reads Oryx and Crake will have such a disturbing revelation as I have had over a cup of coffee, but I do feel that everyone who reads Atwood’s novel will walk away with something much more than, “Geez, that was a good book.”

The effects of MCOM 72: A change in Media Consumption

Within the past seven months, I've quit a nice paying job, kissed LA goodbye, been laid off and started a blog. The blog, not surprisingly, has been one of the highlights of my first semester at SJSU. I admit, I didn't expect much when I was enrolling for MCOM 72, or any of my other courses in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, however, that is no longer the case. With the blog and the guidance of some really terrific professors, I can say that the media I now consume is much more rich and substantial.

In September, I told you that I consumed Craigslist, Paula Deen's Home Cooking, Flaunt and stolen music - and all with food. Most of that still holds true, especially the food part. However, I can say that in addition to those listed, I am now a huge fan of gossip blogs. Thanks to Lilly, who directed me to Pink Is the New Blog, I have been feasting on the tastiest of celebrity dish. Spurred on to find others like it, I came across Go Fug Yourself, The Defamer and Jossip (all listed under "Chisme" in my blogroll - Spanish slang for gossip for you gringos).

In addition to blogs, I have also become an avid reader. This is in part to Mitch Berman, creative writing professor at SJSU. He introduced myself and about 15 other students to Neil Gaiman and since then, I've been devouring his books left and right. If you were one of the fortunate ones to hear Neil read in November then you know of the spell this man has cast upon us - he's just fucking brilliant, and rather attractive, I might add.

One of the things that has changed since that initial blog, is that I no longer steal music. That's right, Limewire is no-longer a part of my routine. After the class discussions we had on the music industry, I felt a bit dirty for ripping music, particularly, from musicians who probably make far less money than I do. To compensate for this, I've started an account with Rhapsody where I can stream music, on my desktop and throughout my house. I was initially skeptical that they would not have many of the musicians that I love - The Rentals, Figurine, Peaches, Antony and the Johnsons, and Kraftwerk. To my surprise, they do - and so much more! Well worth the $9.99/month.

Another change in my consumption occured with my viewing habits. I underestimated the amount of time I would need to put into going to a university - and like most college students, found myself constantly unable to watch my favorite shows. Thankfully, I am now a subscriber to TiVo, which has changed my viewing habits so that the television now revolves around my schedule - I never have to miss Medium or Project Runway now!

My subscription to Netflix has also changed my consumption of movies. Growing up in LA, you take for granted all the opportunities to watch some really great films. It wasn't until I moved to San Jose that I felt completely out of the loop. This is where Netflix has really helped out, because now, I can just log onto Netflix.com, and place movies in my que, even before they're released.

Since enrolling in MCOM 72, I am beginning to understand the media machine. It is much more than just TV, Film and Radio - New Media is rapidly changing the way that we recieve and process information, and this course is a perfect example of how it is doing just that. As far as continuing to blog - I'll be playing with a few ideas in the next few weeks as to the direction I would like to take it in.

At this time I'd like to point out two classmates whose blogs I have really enjoyed reading. First, Kelley Lugea. Her insights are always enlightening and her writing fresh, clear and concise. Secondly, Amir Masood. He's got a knack for wit, dry humor and has a clever approach to writing. I've had an opportunity to work with both of these individuals on group projects - they have what it takes and I encourage them and the rest of you to keep on pushing your talents - GO SJSU!

Liam Sullivan is a god(dess)

If you don't know who Liam Sullivan is, then chances are you know him by his alter ego, Kelly - bad drag, shoes obsessed, txt message broke-up, muffin baking comedian from Los Angeles. When I first stumbled upon his/hers myspace profile several months ago, I wanted to quickly dismiss s(him) as another Jeffree Fecking Star. However, just when I thought that Kelly was on the outs, I hear the news that Liam Sullivan is actually filming a sitcom for VH1 called "I Hate My Thirties." Prompted by the news I quickly searched, and not hard nor long I might add, and came across a plethora of work done by Liam Sullivan. My favorites would include "Muffins," "Love Letters," and "Text Message Breakup" (if you don't mind cartoon children lip-synching, you can actually hear a new song/parody called "Let Me Borrow that Top").

So what makes Liam Sullivan so damn funny? For starters, he taps into the quarks about ourselves, people we know and people we want nothing to do with. His knack for poking fun at situations we've all been in make his work so accessible that even your grandmother can get a good laugh. Let me not forget his taste for the dramatic - I mean really, those wigs are pretty awesome.

What surprises me is that Liam Sullivan was virtually a nobody until the video for "Shoes" started to be passed around on YouTube and Myspace a little over a year ago. Well much has changed since then, his album, which was released in August 2006, has hovered in the Top Ten Comedy Songs amongst iTunes buyers and he has single handedly coined the word "Betch." Perhaps it's time for you and I got get on the YouTube band-wagon, that is if you haven't done so already - you never know, we might just be the next Kelly, Betch!

Connecting the CoCo Puffs

Two weeks ago, Ofcom, an independant regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, announced that all junk food ads aired during TV programs targeted at children 16 years and under will be banned at the end of January 2007. It's estimated that the ban will reduce ad revenue by £39 Million annually. What might this have to do with American audiences you ask? Well, as millions starve in 3rd world countries, Western Nations have been fighting a losing battle against childhood obesity, and in response, the AAP, American Association of Pediatrics, demands cuts in children-targeted advertising, including junk food in their recent medical journal.
Though few believe that the AAP's demands will be met, it's something to consider. Some of my most fond memories of waking up on Saturday mornings involved quoting for verbatum "Leggo of my Eggo," "Don't push me, push a push pop," and my personal favorite, "I want a pop, pop, pop. Shhhhhhasta!". Could you imagine a world void of junk food ads? Heaven forbid! However, the chances of these ads disappearing in the near future are a reality we have to face as children continue to burst at the seams. Personally, I feel that targeting advertisers is a terrific ploy to scapegoat an industry already hated by many Americans, but fails to address the real problem of the ever evolving difficulties of parenting in a media saturated world.
So the next time you see your favorite Coco Puffs ad, I recommend you pull out a blank VHS (remember those) and record it, because it just may not be around tomorrow.

Pope Benedict XVI is so L.A.

I love me a good movie. I love Jesus too, but the two don't really go hand-in-hand. So you could imagine how far my jaw dropped when I found out that The Nativity Story, New Line Cinema's depiction of the birth of Jesus Christ, was premiered at The Vatican last sunday. The 7,000 in attendance witnessed history as the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church sponsored the event, it's first ever movie premiere.
Now, there is just something wrong about the world's most powerful religious organization endorsing a movie, in particular, one that comes from a studio that produced such films as The Texas Chainsaw Masacre and The Wedding Crashers. Ever since Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, Hollywood has been jumping on the religious bandwagon - simply put, because there be gold in dem' mines. Yet, what I can't understand, is how naive The Vatican is. Do they not realize how they are now a puppet for the Hollywood machine? True, the movie will undoubtedly stir up a religious fever and may draw viewers of the film into Catholic Churches, but the chances of the movie really saving a soul or even getting a patron to drop a dollar in the collection cup seems far reached. I do have to give it up to the marketing team over at New Line, however - because with this endorsement, they pretty much paid for the $65 million it took to give birth to baby Jesus on the silver screen.
I suppose it's only a matter of time before The Vatican puts out it's own movies and Pope Benedict XVI is up for an Oscar - all dolled up in Armani

The Bestest!

When you give up one addiction, you usually need another to be marginally successful at the task at hand. My addiction, Myspace. I hate it. I love it. I want to get off of it. Fortunately for me, I found The Best of Craigslist. I've been a cruiser, oh, that sounds naughty, of Craigslist for quite some time now. For the most part I would look at the apartment listings and missed connections, not to mention the scores of everyday nudies in the m4m/w4w/m4w/w4m/mm4w/mw4mwwhtmd - you get the idea.
However, what I discovered was that some of the greatest short stories, particularly slice of life (which many of you know are some of my favorite) exist in the "Best Of" arena. Take for example the woman who urinated on her lover. With a quick lesson in dialogue, this would be a fabulous read - it already is and should be filmed.
Another, is the mystery car stall pooper. Trust me, I smell your pain. Excuse me, poop break...

Much better.
Now that my stomach is empty, lets hear from the waitress - Something about a Tori Amos song comes to mind.
So I urge you, dear reader, the next time you are in need of a shoulder to cry on, a story to lift your spirits or something to make you laugh entirely too loud on the 8th floor of the San Jose State libary, take a peek-see at the Best-Of, Craigslist that is.

American Blackout

A Star is Born in "A Face in the Crowd"

In his first role on the big screen, Andy Griffith resonates in the tall tale of a mans rise to glory playing Lonesome Rhodes in "A Face in the Crowd" which opened at the Globe last night. Brought to life by director Elia Kazan ("A Street Car Named Desire") and writer Budd Schulbeg ("On the Waterfront"), the duo blasts the notion of a demigod in a society thristy for it's next big star.

At first glance, the film appears to be another take on a country-boy done good, yet takes a detour into the core of what often times is the ugly side of fame. Indeed, Lonesome snake charms his way into the hearts of the town of Pickett, Arkanssas as well as Marsha Jeffries, played by Patricia Neal ("The Day the Earth Stood Still") who discovers Lonseome in a dilapidated country jail. Wielding his charisma like a a seasoned senator, Lonesome rises in popularity like only a southern boy can until he is at the top of his game. However, with such adoration comes the realization that with fame comes power, which his eccentricity only strengthens until it has become too much of a burden for Mr. Rhodes.

Though the performances of both Griffith and Neal are exceptional, the film, can at times, be a bit over-the-top. However, this further perpetuates the grandiose character of Lonesome Rhodes and the slippery machine he has fabricated. Despite this, "A Face in the Crowd" manages to please on many levels and is a worthy accomplishment of one promising actor, Mr. Griffith, a star in the making.
